Netflix considers releasing different cuts of shows and movies for mobile devices

The idea of watching an entire movie or TV series on your phone was completely ludicrous just a few short years ago, but in 2017, everyone is watching content on their mobile devices. In fact, mobile viewing has become so common that Netflix chief product officer Neil Hunt says the company is considering releasing new cuts of its original movies and TV series specifically for the mobile audience.
“It’s not inconceivable that you could take a master [copy] and make a different cut for mobile,” Hunt said in a briefing with the media in San Francisco on Wednesday, according to The Verge . While mobile-specific cuts aren’t currently available on Netflix, Hunt says that “it’s something we will explore over the next few years.”
As Hunt explains, these cuts would be versions of a show or movie that are easier to see on smaller displays. That could mean using different scenes or shots altogether to improve the mobile viewing experience.
If you’ve ever tried to watch a Netflix series on your phone, you know that it’s not the preferred way to watch. Not only does your face need to be inches from the screen, but you’re never going to be able to see as detailed an image on your 5-inch phone display as your would on a 49-inch television.
Whether or not this will make mobile viewing a viable alternative to larger screens remains to be seen, but as Hunt notes, “mobile screens are the majority consumption device” in several Asian countries. As more and more viewers depend on their phones for entertainment, this will become a bigger priority for Netflix.
