The relationship between actors who play onscreen lovers has long been conversational catnip. For audiences, such chemistry tends to be viewed as an absolute. By common agreement, a couple either have it (Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in, say, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayemge ) or they don’t.
And Bollywood knows what it is doing. There is far less guesswork than there used to be. The endless experts tell the big studios which actor couplings are appealing and are likely to play best with the majority of people in target audiences.
Taking that winning formula forward, Badrinath Ki Dulhania (Badrinath’s Bride), releasing on March 10, reunites Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan as lovers for the third time, following
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014) and Student of the Year (2012).
Both from showbiz families, these young contemporary actors are the most loved and well-matched onscreen couple in Bollywood. Be it their witty banter or the romantic scenes, they are completely at ease with one another, and this comfort level is replicated on screen. They do it so well that they almost convince you it is new and cool.
The trailer of Badrinath Ki Dulhania has already generated a buzz on social media, with audiences tweeting their reactions — good word of mouth is important in this business. In the trailer, Dhawan and Bhatt sling fiery one-liners at each other, break into song, and dance along 90s cult hit song "Tamma Tamma Loge" that featured Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt. They seem to "have it".
